Amritsar: In the latest incident of post-election political violence in Punjab, Akali Sarpanch Gurpinder Singh Lalli was beaten to death by a group of men at Atari Chet Singh village on Wednesday.
As per reports, the attackers allegedly belonged to the Congress party. The fight took place on account of old rivalry for control of political turf in the area.
Senior Akali Dal leaders have been complaining of harassment to their party workers after assumption of office by the Congress government in the state. Punjab has a long history of post-election violence where workers of the party in power target the losing side mainly on account of assuming control of the economic resources as well as the political space.
Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has recently gone on record saying that tough action will be taken against people involved in perpetrating such incidents.
