Chandigarh: The State Prisons Department has put 30 employees on notice for their suspicious activities on the jail premises.
It has been alleged that these 30 employees were providing illegal facilities to the prisoners.
433 mobile phones and 29 unnamed SIM cards, 425 intoxicant tablets, 53 packets of smoking bidis, white powder and cigarettes have been recovered in the last three months from the jail premises.
The “connivance” of the jail staff with influential prisoners, including gangsters and politicians, has been a subject of debate following the Nabha jailbreak and the alleged organisation of a “darbar” by murder accused Shiv Lal Doda in his cell at the Fazilka sub-jail.
“The notice is the last opportunity to the employees to mend their ways. We had learnt that their activities were suspicious but we want to give them a chance to be responsible employees,” said ADGP-Prisons Rohit Choudhary.
“A total of 208 officers/officials have been awarded Class-1 commendation certificates with cash rewards for their sincerity and zeal towards their duties and department had dismissed six employees of different ranks and suspended an equal number of employees in the last few weeks”, he added.
