New Delhi: The Delhi state election commission (SEC) announced the date for polls to the three municipal corporations on Tuesday and also added that EVMs will be used in Delhi municipal polls on April 22.
“EVMs will be used in the civic polls. “Rules need to be amended to hold MCD elections through ballot paper. Delhi govt need to take a call on it”, State Election Commissioner SK Srivastava said.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, Arvind Kejriwal wrote a letter to the Election Commission of India asking them to not use o use paper ballot instead of EVMs for upcoming Municipal Elections in Delhi.
Nearly 1,33,13,295 voters will decide the fate of candidates on 272 seats in the three civic bodies:
1. North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC)
2. South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC)
3.East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC).
NDMC and SDMC have 104 seats each while EDMC has 64 seats. Presently, BJP has 152, Congress 91, AAP 8, BSP 10, others 9 while one seat is vacant.
For the civic polls, AAP has already declared candidates for 248 out of 272 municipal seats across the three municipal corporations. The candidates have started door-to-door campaign, besides top leaders led by chief minister Arvind Kjeriwal having started holding jan sabhas.
