Chandigarh: With INLD threatening to go ahead with its program to dig the SYL Canal, the governments on both sides have invoked Section 144 to prevent people from crossing the border.
The Punjab government has implemented section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in the Patiala district where the INLD supporters are expected to gather to begin digging the canal. Special vigil is being maintained at border points such as Sarala Kalan Head, Loh Simbli and Shambhu barrier.
The Haryana government on the other hand has implemented section 144 in the Ambala district. INLD supremo Abhay Chautala had given a call to the workers to assemble in Ambala from where they have announced plans to proceed towards Ismailpur.
The Punjab police has set up a temporary control room at Shambu and have conducted aerial surveys to keep tab on movement along the border. The police have also moved over 5000 personnel from other areas of Punjab to Patiala to maintain peace in case of a face off with the protesters.
